Southwest Regional Medical Center offers speech therapy services on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Outpatient services are offered from the Wellness Center on the first floor of the hospital by a licensed speech therapist. Our therapist works with preschool through adult age populations and can evaluate and remediate speech, language, cognitive and swallowing disorders. Audiology testing is also offered for both individuals and through our corporate employee health program.
What disorders can be treated by a Speech Pathologist? • Articulation/Speech Intelligibility • Expressive/Receptive Language • Voice • Fluency/Stuttering • Aspiration Pneumonia • Swallowing • Stroke • Cancer (Oral Cavity, Throat) • Traumatic Brain Injury/Aneurysm • Cerebral Palsy • Autism • Down Syndrome • Clefts of the lip, soft palate, and hard palate • Craniofacial Malformations • Mental Impairment • Learning Disabilities • Auditory Processing; and any other disorder that impairs the speech, language cognitive, or swallowing function of the patient.
What qualifications must a Speech Pathologist possess to practice? • Undergraduate/Bachelor’s Degree in Speech Pathology/Audiology • Master’s degree in Speech Pathology from an accredited college or university • Completion of 375 clinical hours of hands-on treatment and 25 hours of observation of treatment with patients. • Completion of a Clinical Fellowship Year of at least 36 weeks of full-time professional experience or its part-time equivalent. • Passing score on the National Exam for Speech Pathology and Audiology (NESPA) • Certificate of Clinical Competence after completion of the Clinical Fellowship Year
