Cynthia J. Cowie has been named as Chief Executive Officer of Southwest Regional Medical Center. Cowie has been serving as Chief Nursing Officer for Southwest Regional since 2004 and brings 27 years of progressive healthcare experience to the role.
“Cindy’s passion for providing outstanding patient care coupled with her knowledge of the hospital, will enable Southwest Regional to continue moving forward as we further expand technology and programs to serve the health care needs of our community,” shared W. Hudson Connery, Jr., President and CEO of Essent Healthcare. Essent Healthcare purchased Southwest Regional Medical Center nearly two years ago and has since invested nearly $2 million into the facility.
“I am excited and honored to serve in this capacity,” shared Cowie. “Southwest Regional Medical Center has an exceptional medical staff, committed employees and an outstanding board of directors. The past two years have proven that by working together, we can accomplish wonderful things.”
Cowie previously served as Director of Care Management for Mercy Health Systems, Case Management Coordinator for Mon General Hospital and has held various roles with Southwest Regional Medical Center dating back to 1994. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Waynesburg College where she served as a Clinical Instructor. She is also the Past President of the Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society.
Cowie is very active in the community, serving as Chair for the Greene County MAGIC Diabetes Coalition, guest lecturer for Waynesburg College and Chairperson for Lungs at Work. She is also the recipient of the 2004 Sigma Theta Tau Society Nursing Practice Award.
Cowie will be responsible for overseeing many projects that are currently underway. Most notable is a renovation project of the second floor that will improve the speed and accessibility for diagnostic imaging including X-ray, MRI, CT and Mammography services. Emergency and Laboratory Services will also be enhanced. “We are approaching the two year anniversary since the sale of the hospital and I am so excited about the progress we have made. In addition to reducing our length of stay in the emergency department, we have also expanded our laboratory hours and added new digital x-ray equipment. We have opened an Allergy Clinic, an ICU and a Behavioral Health Unit.” said Cowie. “The renovation project will now enable us to reduce the length of time a patient will have to wait for emergency and outpatient services.”
Cowie replaces David Kreye, who left the role of CEO in May to accept a position in San Antonio, Texas. “David left an excellent foundation from which to build. Southwest Regional benefited from his outstanding leadership and I am proud to build upon the momentum he instilled here during his tenure,” expressed Cowie. “More and more we hear from our patients and the community that they can see things changing in very positive ways. Yes, we are listening to their needs and in many ways, we have only just begun.”
Cowie will assume the role of CEO immediately. She lives in Washington with her husband Jim. They have 4 grown children and a granddaughter.
Southwest Regional Medical Center is a 73 bed acute-care hospital, having grown from a 54 bed facility just two years ago. Founded in 1907, the hospital has been providing quality health care to the community for over 100 years.
